Net interest margin (NIM) is net interest income expressed as a percentage of average earning assets. It is the single most-watched profitability measure for a bank because it captures, in one figure, both the earning power of the balance sheet and how effectively the bank has priced its assets and liabilities relative to each other.

Net Interest Margin = Net Interest Income ÷ Average Earning Assets
(Net Interest Income = Total Interest Income − Total Interest Expense)
Average earning assets — not total average assets — form the denominator, since non-earning assets (interest-free cash reserves, fixed assets, and other non-interest-bearing items) do not generate the interest income measured in the numerator.
